Karen Gillan Explains The Doctor's & Amy's Relationship

MTV have released a video interview and article on The Doctor's and Amy's relationship in Series 6.

"Amy's relationship with The Doctor is going to have a few ups and downs and changes in this new series, particularly because Rory's on board," Gillan told MTV News. "It adds a whole new dimension to it. I think having him on the TARDIS really emphasizes the relationship [between Amy and The Doctor] and makes it slightly clearer."

According to Gillan, the pair's flirtatious relationship is a thing of the past now that she's a married woman — but that doesn't mean Amy's any less close to The Doctor. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

"There's this one moment where Amy realizes that [she] and The Doctor are best friends — really weird, unhealthy best friends — but I think from the last series with Amy kissing The Doctor and things like that, it's moved on," she explained. "It's something much deeper than that."

"She's not trying it on anymore," she laughed. "It's something far deeper and it's kind of an emotional connection of two people who are best friends."

Karen Gillan: 'Doctor Who Should Revisit 1960s'

Karen Gillan, who plays Amy Pond in Doctor Who has recently said that she would like a visit to the Swinging Sixties in the show.

But, she admitted that such an episode "wouldn't be very exciting", which of course Doctor Who usually is.

She told the Press Association: "I always think I'd like to go back to the 1960s, but that wouldn't be very exciting for Doctor Who, because what would the monster be?"

Addressing her new role in BBC Four's Shrimpton, which is set in the '60s, Gillan revealed that she is excited.

"I'm already well into my research now and I just love that period," she said. "When that script came along I was like, 'This is perfect for the first thing that I do after I finish Doctor Who'.

"So this'll be my first venture outside of Doctor Who, scaring me slightly but I'm just so looking forward to it. I just find it such an interesting, fascinating period."
