The TARDIS is marooned onboard a 17th-century pirate ship whose crew is being attacked by a mysterious and beautiful sea creature, as the time-travelling drama continues.

Becalmed and beset by cabin fever, the pirates have numerous superstitious explanations for the Siren’s appearance. The Doctor has other ideas but, as his theories are disproved and every plan of escape is thwarted, he must work to win the trust of the implacable Captain Avery and uncover the truth behind the pirates’ supernatural fears – and he must work quickly, for some of his friends have already fallen under the Siren’s spell…

The Doctor is played by Matt Smith, Captain Avery by Hugh Bonneville, Amy by Karen Gillan and Rory by Arthur Darvill.

Doctor Who Details Series 6 - Mr Moffat - Digital Spy

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has praised the new run's opening episodes.

In an interview with the Radio Times, the writer claimed that two-part adventure 'The Impossible Astronaut' and 'Day of the Moon' feels like a series finale.

"I said to our genius director Toby Haynes, 'Start like it's the finale', and my God, that's just what he's done," said Moffat. "I'm not sure Doctor Who has ever felt bigger, bolder or madder."

He added: "The Doctor, Amy, Rory and River in the Valley of the Gods, Nixon's White House, Area 51 and a strangely familiar spaceship. Oh, and there's Alex Kingston diving backwards off a skyscraper."

"By Lake Silencio, on the Plain of Sighs, a story will begin and end," he teased. "A good man is going to die [and] an impossible life will begin.

"Our heroes will set out on the long road to the deadliest secret in the universe, and when it stares you in the face, you might just discover you've known about it all along."

Four envelopes, numbered 2, 3 and 4, each containing a date, time and map reference, unsigned, but TARDIS blue. Who sent them? And who received the missing number one? This strange summons reunites the Doctor, Amy, Rory and River Song in the middle of the Utah desert and unveils a terrible secret the Doctor’s friends must never reveal to him.

Placing his life entirely in their hands, the Doctor agrees to search for the recipient of the fourth envelope – just who is Canton Everett Delaware the Third? And what is the relevance of their only other clue: ‘Space 1969′? Their quest lands them – quite literally – in the Oval Office, where they are enlisted by President Nixon himself to assist enigmatic former-FBI agent Canton, in saving a terrified little girl from a mysterious spaceman.
